Antox — A congenital birth defect caused by the influence of Sanctuary's artifical gravity on the unborn, affecting as much as one-third of Nebari births. Antox attacks the joints and respiratory system of infants and children, usually appearing by the third cycle of life. Before the development of a treatment, the disease was invariably fatal and few of those affected lived past their seventh day of iadne. The Establishment permitted euthenasia of infants diagnosed with antox. Since the discovery of a medical procedure that utilizes surgical and radiological processes to reverse the degenerative effects, most Nebari children survive the disease.  They are, however, left with weakened knees and elbows and most wear gravitational dampeners throughout their lives. Adult survivors of antox may also be recognized by a characteristic crouching posture and a noticably unsteady, breathy voice. Some members of The Establishment feel that antox survivors should be relocated to non-conformist camps.

Arachnid Regiment — The Peacekeeper unit assigned the task of patroling the borders of Nebari Space (thank you to Karlsweb for this term).

Angroden— A very small percentage of Nebari are born with a congenital condition which produces pronounced hemaphroditism, and these individuals are called androgens. Possessing functional genitalia and reproductive organs of both sexes, some Nebari scientists have speculated that this mutation may represent an evolutionary step toiwards a parthenogenic, single-sex species. Most androgens are taken from their parents at birth and either killed, placed in the care of Establishment scientists for medical research, or placed in "non-conformist camps."

Carrier Vessel — A ship intermediate in size between host ships and transports, often used in shuttling large numbers of colonists, non-conformists, Tranquility Guard, etc.

Chliks — Avians, including both volant and aquatic species, still found in a few places on Nebari Prime. Chliks almost became extinct during the Final War, after the Hathnor tribe used them to spread a viral weapon.

The Contagion— Genetically engineered from the recombined DNA of several viral agents and the Orliandis plant, the Contagion represents a covert act of biowarfare on the part of the Establishment, directed against species in systems slated for eventual occupation. Establisment scientists have begun spreading the disease by injecting it into the bloodstream of unknowing Nebari dissidents prior to allowing them to leave Sanctuary. Spread by sexual contact, the disease lies dormant until a future date when it will be triggered. The affected become extremely docile, facilitating quick victories with minimal casualties for Nebari forces. A cure has been discovered offworld, by alien scientists, but is only available on the blackmarket.

The Code (also The Code of And'wer) — A pact signed by the leaders of the survivors of the Final War, authored by the Nebari philosopher Leh'nathik, to establish a new order free from international and intertribal conflict. Though it is touted by The Establishment, many Nebari feel that their government has long since betrayed the spirit and true meaning of Leh'nathik's writings, perverting them into an ideological justification for tyranny.

Core nymphs — A transdimensional insectoid organism inadvertently brought to Sanctuary by merchant vessels. Core nymphs weave elegant silken webs to snare food. However, once they mature, the nymphs become too heavy for the web and it snaps, propelling them back into their home dimension.  The "snap" is so powerful that it blows out windows and sometimes whole walls. Over time, the nymphs have caused a great deal of structural damage on Sanctuary, depsite an ongoing campaign to erradicate them. (courtesy Mellá)

Equatorial Ocean (also Equatorial Sea, Middle Sea, Midwater) — Also known as the Ring of Gehllen, this narrow seaway encircles the entire planet and never freezes over.

The Establishment — The monolithic psyhcoarchy which rules the majority of the Nebari people from Sanctuary, enforcing conformity for "the greater good" of all Nebari (and other species within the Establishment's sphere of control).

Final War (also Tlad'noban) — The last Nebari world war, which took place almost a thousand cycles ago and preceeded the exodus from the planet and the construction of Sanctuary.
During the three apocalyptic days of Tlad'noban, most of the planet’s indigenous fauna and flora, along with most of the Nebari population, were wiped out. The planet is not dead, though vast portions of its ice-bound continent’s were rendered uninhabitable. During the war, fission bombs were used to destroy cities, but the worst damage to the planet’s biosphere, the greatest loss of life, resulted from advanced chemical and bioweapons technology. Three great Nebari nations were involved in and decimated by the war, Hathnor to the south, Klan'eth in the west, and Norp in the east.

Gartnik— An insectoid which fertilizes the Orliandis plant in the wild.

Standard Host Vessel — A large vessel capable of short "simulated" starburst, usually providing docking stations and support for a dozen Nebari host ships.  Without weapons (all Nebari SHVs are "officially" unarmed), a single host vessel was able to destroy the famed PK Command Carrier, the Zelbinion.

Ice Forests — Along the shores of the equatorial sea, vast forests comprised of many species of cold-resistent, evergreen trees, many of tremendous height, once covered much of the land not blanketed by glacial ice sheets. However, much of the ice forests were destroyed in the ravages of the Final War. The Nebari evolved millions of years ago in the high canopies of the ice forests. The trees survive harsh climatic conditions via a combination of radiation resistence and a natural antifreeze present in the cytoplasm.

Iadne — The act of "birth," when young Nebari hatch from mature, fertilised eggs, laid a half an arn earlier by females. The day of iadne is celebrated by children, but not adults. The period between egg-laying and hatching is referred to as Iadnus.

Lethnine — An number of air-borne species of algae, native to Nebari Prime. Lethnine inhabit the planets lower atmosphere in vast, drifting colonies. It is lethnine clouds, seen from space, which give the planet its pale blue-green colour. Lethnine is harvested by argricultural vessels, and forms the foundation of the Nebari diet (at least for all those aboard Sanctuary). It is also fundamental to the food chain of the planet's biosphere.

Mental Cleansing — A complex neurological procedure employed by The Establishment to control social "non-conformists" (all those at odds with The Establishment and its agenda). The procedure, which takes as long as one hundred cycles to complete, employs a combination of narcotics, neural alteration, manipulation of the metacortex via the optic nerves, and subliminal opperant conditioning to purge all "anti-social" and violent thoughts from the minds of a subject. The process is considered irreversible.

Nay'savevyen System — The solar system including Nebari Prime, along with twelve other planets, and many moons and planetoids, which orbit a yellow star, known as Nay'savevyen (This is also the name of the most powerful of dieties in Nebari mythology; Nay'saveyen is said to have created life and all the worlds.). The planets in the Nay'savevyen System, in order of decreasing proximity to the star itself (sometimes referred to simply as vevyen) are: Morlon (terrestrial; no moons), Prolix (terrestrial; 1 very small moon), Grah'lix (terrestrial; no moons), Nebari (terrestrial; 1 moon), Habari (terrestrial; 2 moons); Frensara (gas giant; 35 moons); Sznasara (gas giant; 17 moons); Luren (gas giant; 8 moons); Vevren (terrestrial; no moons; Vevren was probably originally a large rogue asteroid captured by
Nay'savevyen); Oplixis (gas giant; 24 moons); Meh'lixis (terrestrial, no moons); Nev'yon (terrestrial; no moons).

Nebari — A gray-skinned, dark-eyed "sebaciod" species endemic to the only habitable planet of the Nay'savevyen System ("Nebari System").

Nebari Prime — Homeworld of the Nebari, fourth planet from the sun, this world has existed in an ice age for tens of millions of years.

Non-conformist Camps — Instillations for the containment of individuals considered entirely reprobate and beyond even the effects of mental cleansing (or, as with the case of androgens, undesirable in any case). These camps are located offworld, far beyond Nebari Prime and Sanctuary, and the inhabitants of Sanctuary know little of them. No one comes back from a non-conformist camp and there are rumours of mass executions, though the Code expressly forbids capital punishment.

Orlian — A large volcanic island located in the equatorial ocean of Nebari Prime's Western Hemisphere, important for the presence of a unique "micro-climate" under which specialized organisms, such as Orliandis, flourish in warmer conditions than are generally present on the planet.

Orliandis — Known to some as the "Nebari rose," a rare flower plant native to a single island located in Nebari Prime's equatorial sea. Possessed of powerful narcotic effects, the Orliandis plant is believed to have beenm key in the bioengineering program which created the Contagion.

The Resistance — A small, but growing, band of increasingly-organized Nebari dissidents who have rejected rule of the Establishment and seek to overthrow the government by any means necessary. The Resistance believes that The Establishment has betrayed its own people and perverted a once benevolent ideology created to ensure survival following the Final War.

Sanctuary — The vast artificial ring encircling Nebari Prime, home to some eight billion native Nebari.

Sire — Father. All Nebari births follow from the union of two males and a female. The males are referred to as "sires."

Traquility Guard — The Establishment has no standing military and maintains that the necessity for a military would only prove that its system is a failure. Instead, the Nebari psychoarchy has created a class of civilian police (TGs, "tigs") assigned the duties of maintaining order, protecting the greater good, and identifying actual and potential non-conformists.

Tar'ges — Nebari Prime's single natural satellite. Tar'ges is also an all-seeing god of the underworld in Nebari mythology.

Transport Ship (also Skiff, Star Runner) — A small vessel manned by 1-3 individuals, generally used only for travel from a planet's surface to a host ship or orbiting space station.

Whelt — Immense marine vertebrates common to Nebari Prime's equatorial sea, adult whelt's may reach lengths in excess of 60 metras, some some species are quite small, whith adults no larger than 2.5 metras. Whelts evolved from land vertebrates about 45 million arns ago. They were an important source of food and heating oil for Nebari for thousands of cycles.

Va'ganor — The name which ancient Nebari people gave to the combined effects of a nearby wormhole and pulsar star. The wormhole, located only a few light years beyond the edges of the Nebari System, dilates on a regular basis, bathing the system in radiation from a pulsar star at its other end. It is under these extreme enviromental conditions that the Nebari, and all the species that have ever existed on Nebari Prime have evolved, making necessary the development of various biological mechanisms for coping with the regular and lethal doses of radiation. In Nebari mythology, Va'ganor is the lesser brother of Nay'savevyen, known also as the unborn twins.

Vedda — As Nebari pass from childhood into sexual maturity, the monochromatic grey of their skin begins to exhibit striking markings, dark blue-black highlights along the cheeks and throat and elsewhere on the body. The markings are very similar in males and females, and generally does not increase the species' sexual dimorphism. The term vedda is a Nebari word which denotes both the markings themselves and the onset and progress of their development. The markings continue to darken through adulthood, becoming quite severe in elderly Nebari.

Zo'man — The extended Nebari mating process/ritual, whereby two males fertilize a gravid female. The sperm of each Nebari male carries only one-third of the total genetic material, while the nucleus of a female's egg carries half. During Zo'man, two males, chosen by the female, repeatedly copulate with the female. Hence, all Nebari children have two fathers and one mother, and this fact of Nebari biology has led to the socities traditional matrilineal system of reckoning familial relationship. However, mothers take only a small role in the rearing of their children. After only a couple of arns, the Nebari child is raised almost entirely by one or both of its sires. Life-long bonds, especially between males, often (but not always) follow from Zo'man.
